My 1.9D averages about 42-44mpg on a mix of driving. On a long run at a max of 70 I have got 49 mpg and that was shortly after I got the car. I would expect to do a bit better than that now I know the car's characteristics a bit better.

Another thought, in brief terms what is the difference between the Mk1 and the Mk2 please? Any better than the other? Also are all the 2.0 diesel engines turbo?

2L turbo 1.9 not. 1.9 very easy to maintain at home and for example our 2000 reg 1.9 car has done over 160000 miles uses no oil between changes and still returns over 40mpg and it works hard.
Mk1 headlights are better than mk 2 so if you do a lot of country lanes check both out in the dark

I had a 1.9 in my C15
Aftermarket turbo kits are available.
It had that lovely diesel crackle, and was doing well in excess of 50mpg (probably due to the power/weight ratio of the van)
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top
