1.9 v 2.0hdi - Servicing and repair costs & hassle
#1
Hi all again, many thanks for your input to my Berlingo questions on my other topics. I've got some more questions about Berlingos which I hope you will be able to help me with.

This time it concerns servicing and running costs and associated hassle. I'm reasonably ok spannering but have no experience of electronic control systems now fitted to modern engines.

How do the 1.9 and 1.6/2.0hdi diesels compare with the complexity and costs of routine servicing and repairs please? Is it possible to service both types at home?

If garages are to carry this type of work what difference may there be in the costs of looking after two different types of vehicle?

Sorry to keep picking your brains but my old Maestro diesel is old and tired and needs replacing with a suitable vehicle. Any help, comments and suggestions most welcome.

Main dealer servicing costs for my previous 1.9D were much the same as my current 1.6hdi. This is just routine servicing tho. Repairs to hdi diesels will be generally higher. If you are looking for a Berl. a few yrs old & are not worried about performance then I'd go for the 1.9D unless you find an hdi with full main dealer service history as oil change intervals & use of correct oil are most important on hdi's.

2.0HDi nowhere near as sensitive as 1.6HDi. The 2.0 was used for years in various PSA models and ata 90 BHP is virtually "bulletproof" provided it has been looked after. 1.6 known to be intolerant to incorrect oil and servicing intervals and practices. Will also have DPF which the 2.o benefits from not having.

The 2.0 is straightforward for DIY servicing. Everything easily accessible and no special tools needed, although with any modern engine a code reader is a worthwhile investment.
