Strange noise ?

My 2001 2.0 hdi has always had a strange noise on left hand side. Sounds like the gearbox. Not the usual knock or click of a CV joint, but it may be. I’ve no idea. 
Having said that, whilst searching recently for information re my other post on Torsion bars, I did notice somewhere a mention of a gearbox bearing failing. 
Can anyone enlighten me please ? And is it terminal or fixable ?

After driving van back from MOT I can hear definite clicking. So CV joint I think

Replaced both drive shafts last year. Bought from place in Birmingham and delivered next morning. Very reasonably priced too so it worth trying to rebuild them. No more strange noises or clicking and apart from the struggle with the lower ball joints, not too difficult tbh. Trouble is, clutch is starting to slip, bugger !
