Petrol, fuel economy, I'm astounded!

I've had the billy bus for a year now and never really taken notice of the fuel economy.

Last weekend we went for a short break to the north Yorkshire dales, 309 miles in total, we did a lot of pottering about, steady 55/60 there and back on the m way and a roads and just took our time.

Filled up on our return, worked out the mpg against fuel used.

45.9mpg!

Not bad for a 1.6 petrol?

That's a good overhall mpg, you'd only get another 8mpg or so from the deisel

That's good.the best I got was 47.6 on average according
To the on board computer(if that's to believed ),that was 45 miles on the A55 to Llandudno all dual carriageway steady 55/60 and then on to twisty A roads for another
40 odd miles.i do the same route every Friday afternoon and it's gets on average between 45-47...
I need to set myself a new record me thinks...

I find 60mph is the max speed for economy=av65mpg.
Normal motoring (Mixed) =50+. 1.6 HDi

I find 60mph is the max speed for economy=av65mpg.

Speed is a factor but I find the biggest draw on fuel is engine labour-irrespective of rpm.At least on the diesel motor.
I can watch the trip computer constantly recalculate the average as I go along a flat 50mph A road that I travel twice daily.
Held at a constant rpm (at 1500 rpm the turbo will not allow the engine speed to slow)and the right boot perfectly still,the slight inclines cause the figure to drop then down the other side of the slopes and it rises again.
Once a week I take a trailer at max gross up a really steep pitch.
If I stay below 20mph (hard to do much more!) I get no reading at all on the fuel consumption just blanks
I wonder how that affects the overall figure?
On the way back down it hits a comical 999mpg - I hope that is included!
My current averages are 58.8 mpg / 31mph over 788 miles

I'm quite interested in the quoted mpg figures for the 1.6 petrol engine as we are just about to buy one (Mk3)!

We've looked around on the net and they seem to say that the 2008/2009 1.6 models are quite thirsty at c.35mpg, which would be disappointing to be honest. I also note that the emissions aren't great with those earlier engines, and it's going to cost a bit more to tax than our 2001 Berlingo (1.4)!

Any real world petrol mpg figures out there?

We would have liked a diesel but out of our price range...

I was amazed on a recent round trip from Kent to Yorkshire to get 49.8 mpg. My day-to-day average though is about 40mpg which is mostly shortish journeys.

In my experience, the petrol mpg is very sensitive to how you drive. It only takes a slightly heavier right foot to see the mpg drop off quite sharply.
