HDi worries and advice

Hello all Berlingo people, I'm new to this game and have a desire to buy a 2.0 HDI SLD van to use as kit transport and the occasional stealth camping when converted. Now, I had a chat with my friendly local garage and he told me there are issues around HDi engines with stories of con rods escaping and that's why he doesn't sell Citroen/Peugot's with HDi's. Anyone come across this as well?

I had my heart set on a Berlingo and now getting cold feet (perhaps). I don't have much to spend (£2-£2.5K) and love the fuel economy of the Berlingo but this poses another question. Do I need the power and sophistication of a HDi or can I get by with a 1.9D or equivalent? I must say I do like the attraction of driving a van that behaves like a car though. Most of my kit is relatively lightweight computer stuff and will eventually custom build a seating/sleeping area so power will be needed in future. Advice greatly appreciated Smile

My 2.0 hdi is at around 140k with no issues.

Definitely go for the HDI turbopower in my view! My con rods seem fine, and so are those of the many well-serviced HDIs for sale with over 100k miles on the clock. You can find a DW10 (aka HDI)-derived engine in lots of cars including a 16-valver in the Ford TDCI range, plus Fiat, plus Suzuki... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSA_EW/DW_engine

I started out looking at VW Caddy TDI's but the money went much further with a low mileage secondhand HDI.

Recently drove 500 miles in a day from south coast to Scotland (on 80% of a tankful) and found my Partner 2.0 HDI a very capable travel companion. And that was with a baby onboard too!

Not sure I would sleep in the back, as I'm taller than ~5ft, but I'd be interested in connecting it to a tent.

p.s. I also recommend you compare the Bosch and Siemens fuel systems found in HDIs if you fancy some easy extra power gains from it. Bosch is apparently better.

Give it a yearly oil & filter change to keep the turbo happy and you'll be fine. I've heard of a few problems with the 1.6 Hdi's Confusedcratch: but not with the 2.0.

Turbo failure. Dirty oil clogs the gauze filter in the lube line.
Would have thought they might of addressed this issue with the MK3, or I hope so! :thumbsup:

I too have been looking at the Caddy but it seems for my limited budget, the Berlingo is the only one that fits the bill. This is all academic at the moment as I haven't test driven my preferred spec - 2.0 HDI, <120K miles, age not that important but 2006 would be nice and single SLD important. Oh and tailgate rather than double rear doors but haven't seen one on anything other than an ex forestry commission - but on paper, the Berlingo is the one. I'm becoming a bit obsessed about finding the perfect wagon in my £2.5K budget but don't know how realistic this is! There are so many out there but don't want to buy a lemon. I guess the popularity of the Berlingo speaks for itself.

I think its rather price-driven popularity than anything else.

The C15 had a 20 yr production run,twice reprieved and that was down to the clamour of the great unwashed,baying for cheap wheels.
My 2005 one was only £4500 brand new.

the 2.0hdi is what you want, good economy, sliding doors so the kids dont prang other cars and plenty of room in the boot for the dog. one thing to look for though is suspension as there was an issue with coil springs shearing and blowing the tyres out, make sure its had the recall and caps fitted.
