An afternoon working on the Berlingo

Just spent the afternoon collecting parts and carrying out an oil and filter change and replaced air filter. No problems other than an arsehole at the Citroen Dealers trying to charge me £3.00 plus for two copper sump plug washers even though I was quoted £0.49 each over the phone. Told him to stuff them and went to a Pug dealer instead.

Local motor factor did me a good deal on oil, air and fuel filters and Morris Semi-Synth Oil all for £42.00 which would have been best part of £80.00 from main stealer.

Had to rub down and paint part of the sump as rusty as hell and manged to spill a drop of oil and knock the paint over on the drive...

Could not move fuel filter (Siemens type) with strap wrench so will have to go again with special tool from Machine Mart.....

Must have contributed to my tan today but didn't go topless and rubbed plenty of nice semi-synth oil in to moisturise my skin...

My M49 2.0 hdi was similar, when haynes said these are liable to break! I got one from the local scrappy (full of red diesel?) I found I was able to undo it in my vice. I did not clamp it tight but just enough to wedge the two mounting lugs against either jaw and it unscrewed by hand, albeit with a two handed grip and a rag wrapped round it. I wonder if the strap wrench deforms the threaded ring on the top causing it to lock up and break the body at the mounting lugs or filter body. I only found this due to having no way to grip the filter body to dis-assemble the filter I got from the scrappy & I decided not to even try to take the one apart on the car but removed it and used the vice method. So now I have A spare!

I just tap mine round with a flat bladed screwdriver whilst in situ, always works for me and not damaged threads or casing.

Thanks for all the help, not wishing to inflict lasting damage on the filter housing or my wallet, I sent off to e-bay for the proper tool. I hoped that the postie was going to be kind enough to drop it through the door today but no!....

I got frustrated with waiting and thought that maybe a little persuasion with a large flat bladed screwdriver tapped lightly was worth a go. No heavy handed brute force, just a nice tap-tap and lo and behold the screwed collar began to yield, a couple more taps and I could undo by hand.

Took longer to drain and clean the filter housing than actual remove and refit, quick squeezy-squeezy of the hand grenade shaped bulb watch the air come through and then the $6m question, will she start?. Fired up straight away and left to tick over til all the air out of the piping and jobs a good un....
