Berlingo desire 2.0 Hdi top end'ish type rattle
#1
Hi all..Me again
Ive got a rattle.. Ive removed the aux belt, and its gone...
I changed the belt a couple of months ago after it started shredding..no problems..
Some weeks later and after the engine warmed up I get this rattle..like a bag of nails..

As I said Ive taken the belt off and no rattle..Except I'm sure I can hear the faintest rattle when decelerating..But really nothing compared to what it was like..
Now Im wondering if its not the crank pulley, as that is the only one moving at present..And without the tension of the aux belt is not noticable..
There is also a noticable amount of in/out play on the steering pump pulley..maybe 2 or 3 mm..Is that normal/acceptable..?

As ever your help would be greatly appreciated..
TIA

I've had a 2.0hdi for a few years and done a lot of tinkering with it.
It sounds like something is seriously amiss if you are shredding belts?

I changed the crank pulley early on in my ownership to a Corteco unit as the original was covered in rust/dust from the internals. I'd had a crank pulley disintegrate/separate leaving me stranded on my Transit van so I was mindful of it.

The aux belt has two idlers - I've replaced both of these with INA brand items and changed the tensioner as well. My alternator is only a few years old.

The one thing that did make a noise was my water pump bearings collapsed and the impeller was rubbing in the casing. It was starting to lose a little water as well.

I'm strongly suspecting the crank pulley now as there is a tiny tinkle sound on de acceleration and its the same type of rattle, barely noticable but its there..
Also it wobbles when running and there is a mark where it joins the rubber as if it's been moving side to side..

The belt only shredded once in 10 years so definately down to wear n tear, but it did start wrapping itself around the crank pulley, and the noise started a couple of weeks after i changed the aux belt..

I've come up with an idea to spin up each idler pulley with a drill and 'belt' and see if they rattle, but there's no play or roughness in any of the idlers so... we'll see.

If the crank pulley is shot i might as well do the cambelt at the same time..As usual the job balloons lol

I'll report back
Thanks for the reply, much appreciated..Thank fk for the internet and forums lol !!

One thing I've found with mine is that if I just pottle about locally for a few weeks then it 'cokes' up a bit on one of the injector's. It then idles a bit roughly - watching the aux belt you can see the sprung tensioner pulley moving back and forth to accommodate the tightness and slack of the aux belt as the engine 'hunts'. This puts a lot of loading into the crank pulley.

Taking it for a good few hundred mile thrash always clears it out and it idles a lot smoother for awhile.

The crank pulley can be changed without doing the timing belt. Be warned - the crank bolt is very tight and often needs heat to break the loktite and avoid snapping it. There's a Citroen dealer workshop bulletin detailing the procedure.

Hmm, funny you should say that, I've not had a problem with hunting but my last mot the emissions were high and was advised by the tester to run some additive through and give it a good blast..Instead I gave it a good blast up n down the road on the day of the test which did reduce the emissions..

The car is only being used for local runs apart from a recent trip to UK, but I do give it a blast when poss..

I think I'm going to order up a crank pulley and see what gives..

Having just done front discs and pads I've now found one side of both back wheel cylinders are leaking (STOP light and handbrake light coming on when braking hard) so it's going well at the moment lol
