Has your 2011 1.6Hdi M59 got an Eolys system fitted as I think they were fitted as standard after 2010? If that is playing up it could be injecting too much fluid into the fuel and causing the blue smoke/lumpy idle at start up?

Check the glow plugs, they're probably knackered.
I know many will say HDi's don't need glow plugs to start which is true, (they don't pre heat unless the ambient temperature is low) but the glow plugs do come on after the engine is started to reduce cold engine emissions and to help the engine to warm up.

I dont think it has Eolys, not sure. Ill take a look tomorrow.

I don't believe any of M59 1.6 hdi's had a DPF fitted so no Eolys system . . . not sure how that happened, maybe something to do with when the vehicle was manufactured ?
