[Steering & Suspension] Power Steering leak
#1
For sometime now, I've been noticing that my power steering fluid needed topping up fairly regularly. I pointed it out to my garage and they said "no leak"....twice. Eventually I noticed some spillage on the ground, roughly behind the first 2 digits of the registration plate.
With the new information, the garage finally found the leak and informed me that it was a main dealer part only and would take around 3 hours to fit. As my garage (and me) are in France, sometimes things can be lost in translation, but he said he would get me a price for the part, but it would be expensive. That was several weeks ago and despite 3 emails, he's failed to come back to me with a price for the part, which is out of character, as he's usually pretty good. He knows that I'm on a tight budget and I'm beginning to suspect that the reason he hasn't got back to me, is that this is going to be bad news.
Has anyone had experience of replacing power steering, or could anyone give me an idea of price. ? My van is a 2007 1.6hdi Berlingo.

Are you talking about a power steering pump here? If you are they're not that expensive and there are aftermarket units being made as well.

I did a quick search of a pump part number that should be for your model [4007WL] and the price range from one supplier can be seen here:

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/oem/4007wl

To check that is the correct part number for your vehicle I would suggest going to the catcar.info site [link below] and put in your vehicle VIN which will then give you an online parts catalogue for your vehicle. Once you have located the correct part number for your vehicle, then use that part number to do an on-line search to find prices for parts on various sites.

Difficult to answer your question without more information.

What part did the mechanic say needed replacing ?

Have you got a photograph of the leak and its location / component leaking ?

IF by chance the pump is leaking then this is the time to get the timing belt and water pump replaced since you'll need to remove the timing belt to get the pump off ... that is an IF the pump is at fault.

If the power steering rack is leaking then why not fit a second hand one for a lot less money, well you did say that cash was in short supply Lol.

DIY any good to you ?

Keep us updated with your progress please/

I always thought the steering pump was auxiliary belt driven , must be out of touch.
