Help me troubleshoot. New starter, fresh battery but only ticking when cranking.

Hi. My berlingo b9 2011 L2 1.6 hdi suddenly would not start when turning the key. I had to push the car to get it start and it startet and run perfectly (so I guess there is not a problem with antitheft protection?). Since the battery is new and it seems not to be any problems with the charging, I suspected it was the starter and I have changed it (not a fun job). But still it will not crank, only ticking from footwell. Im gonna get a multimeter tomorrow. Could someone help me what I should do to troubleshoot? Is there a starter relay on these cars (where?).?

And you are confident the battery connections are proper and true? And the battery is the right one?
Put it this way, you change the battery and now have a new fault. What is the likelihood some thing completely unrelated has caused it?

Yeah. It has been working great for 4 months now before suddenly it would not crank anymore. I have cleaned the grounding cable attached to the transmission as well. Everything seems clean and nice. My first though now would be a relay or something. I measured the battery to 12.5V. It's seems a bit low, maybe there are some charging issues? But it has been driving for 2 hours straight with this condition without any signs of low current.

I have  had cars with defective batteries that would fail one time then be fine another.

Isn’t 14.4V more like what you get with the engine running?
The charging voltage.

Resting voltage of 12.5V isn’t too bad.
12.6V would be better (6 x 2.1V) but with it connected in the car there may be some small load.

Having it four months could well mean something else is at fault. I thought you meant a week or two. The resting voltage of the battery to me is acceptable factoring in also what you measured it with.

Had the battery fully charged (13.3v) but still the same symptoms. I have also checked the yellow fuse in the engine bay fusebox. So the culprit might be the relay (for some stupid reason they have made it unrepairable) under the "fusebox" in engine bay? (just reading some rumors ). 

Yeah, it's not fun to depend on push start the car... even worse now the winter comes and it is getting slippery . But can pushing a car to start fry anything?

The fault was a broken cord between engine fusebox and the starter .

There were cases of catalitic converters being ruined by unburnt fuel passing through .An "awake"management system would prevent this.I
