Blower motor not working and burning smell
#1
My blower motor stopped working a while ago. Acrid burning smell at the time. Looking at the blower itself there was a very slight movement of the rotor blades when flicking through 0 - 4. Thought it might be the resistor which I've just changed. It's not worked. Still a very slight movement of the rotor blades when I switch through 0-4 and there is the same acrid burning smell. The blower is quite stiff to rotate manually. Just wondering if this is most likely a burnt out blower or something else. Before I keep buying parts I was hoping to try and find out if the blower works or not maybe by getting some external power to it and see if it works.

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what might be happening and / or if I take it to an auto electrician whether they might just do a me a favour and put some power to the blower to see if it's dead or not.

Cheers

Most likely it's dead.

Before cars got infested with too much electronics,
the fan speeds were controlled with several resistors on the slower speed settings.
the resistors whilst dropping the voltage to the motor, make heat,
which is blown away by the air flow from the fan.

This all works fine until the motor bearings get dry.
The motor pulls more current, the resistors get much hotter & then get even hotter as the seizing fan isn't blowing as much air to cool them.

The thermal fuse on the resistors goes "pop!" and then you only have full speed, or off.

Eventually, the thing is so seized up you get to the bonfire stage, which sounds likely you are at.

So probably Fleabay is the way to go.
