Diesel Eolys/Adblue
#1
My son is considering getting a diesel Berlingo and asked me something I have no idea about.
Do the diesels have Eolys and Adblue systems in the same vehicle or just one or the other as they are there for different reasons?
He's considering anything from about 2017 onwards depending in the mileage/price so sorry but can't be more specific for now.
Thanks.

From around 2015 Berlingos have both Eolys and AdBlue.
They are the ones with the BlueHDi engine.

Eolys is added to the fuel tank every time you refuel.
Its purpose is to allow the DPF filter to regenerate at a lower temperature.

AdBlue is injected into the exhaust in order to reduce the amount of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) coming out of the tailpipe.

I would add he should only consider getting one if he does [fairly] frequent long trips, in that I mean trips where the vehicle gets a good run at speed. The reason being that modern diesels [of all makes not only Citroen] do not like short trips low miles as all their systems [Eolys/Adblue]
A DPF will have a considerably shorter life if only short trips or low speed trips are carried out.

Also with the price of diesel nowadays in the UK, it only makes sense if you are going to do higher mileages.

You didn't mention whether he is looking at a Multispace [car] or a Berlingo [van] One thing that a lot of people do not realise is that the van attracts a much higher level of VED in the UK that the Multispace version.

His idea is to convert it to a camper so I think he was looking at vans. I'll mention to him about the VED difference in the UK but for the reason that he needs to find out if that is a factor in Germany for him (a detail I didn't have need to mention until now) where he'll be buying it. See what he says.
It won't be a commuting vehicle and will get plenty of long journeys though may end up in his car parking spot for a few weeks in between doing stuff with it. Diesel is also cheaper than petrol here by up to 20 cent a litre.

I did more than my fair share of miles in my old diesel B9 around Europe and in the years I owned it only once did I have a DPF warning come on.
Thanks.
