[Transmission] Berlingo 07 won't engage 2nd gear

My 07 mutispace desire won't engage 2nd gear, i push the gear stick back but it wont stay and just pops to neutral. It will go into 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse. 
Is it likely a gear linkage rod or the clutch? 
I'm getting the bus for a week as I'm fed up with repairs. I won't part with her though.

Its more likely to be the linkages than problems with the clutch. The clutch would affect all gears and n0ot just the 2nd gear.

There's quite a few components to the gear selector linkage all with wearable/consumable parts. Generally what has the gear lever been like? Is it as vague as stirring custard in a bucket - has it always been like this or has it become worse?
Luckily the parts are cheap and easy to fix (for a garage or competent diyer)
