knocking from rear
#1
hi all, just some advice if possible.

couple days ago i was setting off home from work and as i went up a hill i heard a knock from what sounded like the back right behind me.
can sometimes hear it on really rough road surfaces or sometimes turning.

we managed to replicate the sound by bouncing the clutch causing the back to jump.

narrowed it down to if the back end gets pushed down and then the back end lifts it will make the knock.

it also seems like the sound is coming from across the full length of the rear now not just one side.

on another note when driving around at any speed absolutely no sound from it, smooth as normal and the rear wheel are not tilted as the garage did check that straight away

thanks in advance

What kind of Mileage has the vehicle done? Is it a van or Multispace version? Has it been used for carrying heavy loads?

Torsion bar or rear axle problems spring to mind as it is a fairly common problem on the M59 model [especially at higher mileages] It is not always obvious and normally is only visible by the rear being lower that it should be. The rear axle can fail due to not enough grease on the axle bearings.

It's the version with all the cupboards that's all I can tell you ? we have had a boot jump in it for about 2 years and done 2 house moves in it but recently using it for work and have taken the boot jump out, probably been out for maybe 2 weeks before the noise. I'm half guessing there's not enough weight in the back to keep it from springing back up as it's used to the weight maybe. It has seemingly quietened off, or at least not as noticeable. It's only on about 72k

Could be the torsion bar or rear axle, common on the M59, especially after carrying heavy loads. Removing the boot jump might’ve shifted the balance it’s used to, but that shouldn’t cause knocking unless something’s already worn.

Check the rear axle, shocks, and maybe even the exhaust or heat shields. Try adding some weight in the back to see if it helps. If it’s getting quieter, keep an eye on it, but a proper check wouldn’t hurt.

Park it in gear on flat level ground with the handbrake off, open the tailgate and stand in the boot dangling to the side of the tailgate. Bounce the rear end up and an down as much as you can. Any clunking is more than likely the axle bearings dieing.

You'd know about it if the torsion bar failed as the rear end would be sat low down on the bumpstops.

A " pre MOT Check " done by a garage would be worth doing and cheap enough, could be enlightening.
