Fuel Gauge trouble
#1
Hello,

I have an issue with my fuel gauge (i think).
I have only recently brought the van as a project as it was needing a fair bit of work.
It is a 2004 1.9 DW8

I have noticed that when i get to around 1/4 tank the van hesitates, lacks power and starts to cut out. I did look into it and found that it was pulling air up from the tank. At first i was fearing there was a split pipe or something however both times it has happened i ave solved it by putting fuel in!
Now i suspect that the fuel gauge is not showing correct. I have been searching on this forum and generally online and seen a few other people reporting the same issue but don’t seem to see what the fix was.

I have attempted a BSI reset but I’m not sure how i know if its actually worked!

Any help is much appreciated, just trying to keep an old van from the scrapper!

To begin with I'd go into defensive mode ....

Carry a spare gallon of diesel of course.

However I'd start driving by using the odometer as a " fuel gauge " to have some other form of reference.

When the engine starts to hesitate and lose power etc fill the tank up and take note of how many gallons it takes to brim it, compare this amount with the documented tank capacity and see if there is an issue with the pump pick up.

From a full tank you can easily work out how many miles to travel before empty.

The above methodology should give you time to look for a solution.

Have to say " back in the day " I drove for years without a working fuel gauge and the above worked for me ... Lol !!

Thanks Geoff, I think that’s a good idea. I mean in theory I can just treat a 1/4 as my new empty but would like to try and fix it eventually.

I may drop the tank once I get low again, that will confirm the actual fuel level too.
