BERLINGO LX MISFIRE
#1
Hi, my Berlingo van suddenly developed a misfire and loss of power. I parked up and had a look and found that the exhaust manifold was red hot. I called the AA and they eventually sent someone out who said there was a problem with the speed sensor, but pointed at the crankshaft sensor. He somehow managed to do a reset and I was able to drive home. I subsequently changed the crankshaft sensor and the van was driving normally.
I then took the van for its MOT. The garage phoned me back saying that it wouldn’t start. They connected it to their computer which was unable to connect to the ECU and show the fault. They then changed the coil assembly which made no difference. They then quoted a large sum for investigative work with no guarantee of success.
At this point I had the van brought home and changed the plugs, fuel filter, air filter and upstream lambda probe. I found that the heater on the old probe was open circuit. No difference.
I found that with the ignition on the throttle body made a buzzing sound. Someone on the forum had found that this was due to a defective accelerator pedal, so I changed the pedal, no difference. I then changed the throttle body, no difference. However now my analyser shows P0223 Throttle/pedal position sensor switch B circuit High P0228 Throttle/pedal position sensor/ switch C circuit High.
The engine will start and tick over but not accelerate or run properly. The throttle valve does not open when the accelerator is pressed down.
Anybody got any ideas how to proceed??

What engine are we talking about here there were a number of different engines, 1.9D, 2.0Hdi, 16.Hdi [Diesels] 1.4 or 1.6 petrol ?

It’s a 1.4 petrol.

Even if you have replaced the crankshaft sensor, was it with a Bosch one? The reason I ask is that I saw a video a while back where a guy spent a lot of time and money on a Peugeot Partner [Berlingo equivalent] trying to fault find a misfire/then non-start only to find it was from a faulty [replacement] Bosch sensor, where it turns out a number had been incorrectly wired up giving a reversed output. You can watch the video here:

https://youtu.be/8dtv1kRNF_U?si=skfo5RT70ucWoNcL

It looks as if there may be a batch of dodgy Bosch crankshaft sensors around as this guy spent a lot of time/effort on fault finding to find out the the new Bosch sensor fitted wasn't working correctly. He replaced it with a cheaper ERA? one and the 'no crank fault' was cured.

You might be lucky and this is also your problem.

Thanks, Multispacer! I’ve actually replaced the sensor with the ERA one, luckily. I think that I may have an ECU problem, but before I replace it I have to check the compression and the injectors.
