Twin Cam Chain Snapped need some Parts Advice
#1
So car broke down this morning just driving along and got a bit of stuttering and she cut out. RAC came out and said there is camshaft and crankshaft alignment faults and this normally means either the chain or belt has went. Belt was done 60K ago but the chain has never been done as it is not in the Citroen service schedule. If it is a belt issue i believe they may cover under warranty as it was less than a year ago it was done however they have been slow confirming this which makes me think there is some substance to it my enquiry.

I have started to use my local Peugeot garage as the service manager is someone i knew from a previous dealer years ago and is a pretty straight guy who does not give me any bullshit. I am just looking at getting pricing straight at min to see where i stand finacially. He thinks it is the chain for sure as they are not well known for belt issues but this plays out in two scenarios 1) top end is busted or 2) whole engine is busted? He has repaired 3 with this issue ad two needed full engines and one person was lucky.

Is there a kit comes for these cars to repair these problems and if so where do you find them? Peugeot do not strip and rebuild they just replace but the cost of buying a remanufactured engine plus transferring all the bits and ECU work is eye watering. After spending 4K in novemeber on it for replacement of DPF, cleaning EGR and replacing the EGR cooler i cannot affor the price of an engine. If the cost of rebuilding is not far different then i am seriously going to have to consider cutting my losses and buying a new car.

How many miles are you on?

PSA are honoring engines up to 96k miles because of this stupid 7mm duplex chain.
Previous Berlingo: 2015 1.6 L1850 90ps In Artic Steel inc Look Pack and Lighting Pack.

Previous Berlingo: K9 2018 Driver M 100ps in Platinum Grey with Safety Pack

Current Berlingo: 2021 K9 Driver M Pro 130ps EAT8 in Platinum Grey with Safety Pack

In my ignorance, is this the diesel or the petrol?
Now a 2019 K9 1.2 petrol.
Before a 2010 B9 1.6 HDi diesel.

Sorry it has been some time to reply i have been busy getting a replacement vehicle and trying to find somewhere to repair the car.

Vehicle is 250k so well over the special warranty period. Spoke to citroen today actually and they will not cover anything due to mileage as they say it is wear and tear at that mileage and too hard to prove otherwise. Thing that really gets me is this is not marked anywhere in the service schedule so unless you have a reason to believe it to be a problem no one says anything. Dealer says they would not change unless it flags up as an issue but even when flagged up for noise they come back to say they cannot find anything like they dont really care tbh. All my work was done there so they know it was never changed and when i reported noise from belt area at 175k they said they could hear something but could not source it. Pure and simple it is lazy workmanship if i knew this was such a big issue earlier i would have done all this. Especially considering they had the cambox stripped last april to fix the cambox seal it would have been easy to replace the 7mm or upgrade if there was space for it.

So at moment prices are between 5k and 7.5k to put another engine in it, just a joke really if i put an engine from a scrap car in that claims to be low mileage i can maybe sort it for 3k but i do not trust engines from scrap cars tbh.

You dont happen to know when they changed on to the 8mm chain and if it has sloved the issue? Only car i could get a hold of at short notice was a 1.5HDi 130 308 SW which was registered in sept 2023.

It is the diesel engine from the facelift in 2019 onward i believe. I see in some places it was changed to 8mm chain around 2023 but some places i also see mid 2020.

My advice here is if you have a berlingo and hear timing belt area noise get it in and do not settle for bullshit like not being able to find it. This is a well known issue and the dealers should be well aware of the symptoms. It amazes me why they did not just recall them for 8mm upgrades when you see how many of these engines are knackered at any one time. A lad i spoke two had two of these go within 6 months of each other.

Going forward i am unsure about the cost but i am kind of feeling it needs to be replaced at each belt change to ensure it runs as best it can.

The 8mm camchain was fitted to 1.5 diesels 2023 onwards so you should be ok with your Peugeot.

If you search online you will find 8mm camchain upgrade kit for around £800. It consists of chain & tensioner plus camshafts & cam carrier. I would guess a 5 hour workshop job to fit.
