M59 1.4 Petrol question
#1
I've been offered a low mileage 1.4 petrol M59 by a friend who lives about 300 miles away from me so goin for a test drive isn't that easy.

Question - how does this engine perform ?  I currently have the 1.6 Hdi 90 engine

Slug / slouch or not ? how does it compare to the 1.6 Hdi

I guess I'm prejudiced towards the diesel but am I being unkind ?

I have no direct experience of the 1.4 Berlingo but a work colleague who had one stated they were fine if lightly loaded but struggled if loaded up. He used to use his for transporting his mountain bikes around the country to go cycling with mates and said if it were just him plus bikes camping stuff it was fine but if there were two of three of them plus bikes the vehicle struggled.

Also, as I'm sure you're aware, the fuel economy on the petrol versions is nothing to write home about and I believe the VED is quite high being an older 1.4 engine.

You'll find it very revvy compared with the low down grunt of a turbo diesel
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

It can be pretty zippy in city traffic, but fully loaded, yeah, it struggles.
(Had 2 M49 with that engine. It can take some abuse... )

It all comes down to what you're thinking of using it for, really.

Thanks for the replies they give me a good insight.
Use would be local driving just wide and too dogs, some motorway and little lugging of loads.
Loads, very occasionally I’d be doing that so not too worried well I did use to have a 1.9d lol !!!

Been a bit slow replying here due to health so sorry about that.

However the the offer has been revoked as my friends daughter has totalled her own car and he is giving the Berlingo to her.

Have to say I’m ok with my 1.6 Hdi 90 engine

Thanks again for the replies
