[Engine] Part of Dipstick Stuck
#1
Hi Guys, have a problem with a broken dipstick, the plastic tip has broken off and is stuck in the tube. It was the original Citroen part (glass fibre rod). Brought a new one (Citroen), but it wouldn't sit fully into the tube with about 50mm protruding. Tried wire from a stout clothes hanger which pushed the broken part down the tube further but the dipstick still protrudes about 10mm. Tried an electrician's conduit rod (about 4mm diameter fibre glass rod) but it only marginally improved things.

Reading posts on this forum the tube is in two parts, with the broken part of the dipstick in the lower tube part. I've used quite a bit of force to try a clear it with the rod but without success.

The way I see it I could drop the sump and try to clear the tube. Is this lower tube detachable (its probably the only way I could clear the obstruction, to take it off)?

The alternative would be to live with the obstruction and cut say 15mm off the bottom of the dipstick. I've poured a small amount of oil into the dipstick and it does drain into the sump.

Open to advice/suggestions.

Can you not push it further down with something else into the sump then retrieve it?
With the age if the car I would possibly  go for the alternative
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

I'd b tempted to try and punch it down into the sump, though something with the right combination of strength and bendiness could be challenging.

Failing that. pull the sump off and pull the bits out that way. Messier, more time consuming, but sure to work.

Went for the option of reducing the dipstick length, an oil change was done at the same time. With 148K miles on the clock and approaching the end of its life felt I could live with this modification.
