[Steering & Suspension] Power steering Leak
#1
Hi all,
Just as I finnished replacing quite a few (Hard to access!!) Parts, and getting my Berlingo B9 Lx Van reading for an MOT next week and after refiiting a New Auxillary belt I noticed a tiny leak just above the new cluth pulley (I've just fiited by the way!).
I seems it is coming from the Power steering pump shaft? that is just above ( imagine the 2 pulleys form a No: 8, one located above the other if that makes sense).
I've looked at the top of the Power steering pulley it lookes dry so I assumed it might be coming from the center/bottom of the same shaft & dripping on top of the alternator pulley.
now any1 will be tempted to:
1) get a seal kit and refit it.
2)replace the entire P/S Pump
3) use a P/S pump stop leak Product, send it the the MOT station and buy time to repair afterwards.

I know it seems that I 've answered my own queries my self, but I just runnned out of ideas or I cannot think logiic right now!

Any help/guidance will be appreciated as to what shall I do next in such a short time?

**N.B. for options: 1 & 2, I would like a help as to how to remove/replace a P/S pump on a: Berly Van, B9/75-55/ hdi/ 2009-Lx.** ( any Diagr/Instructions?)
- Should I remove the top parts first? or is it possible to dismantle just the pump directly?

Thanks to all

Bit tricky to follow that, but ultimately your limitation is time.

Can you source a seal kit and rebuild it in time?
Can you source and fit a replacement pump in time?

Frankly, I wouldn't bother with stopleak goop, it works by softening and swelling all the seals in the system. Quick route to ruining all the seals IMO.

The final option, is the leak small enough that you can clean it up immediately before the MOT?

It won't fail the MOT for a small oil leak, at worse it would be an advisory but it probably won't be noticed as they don't spend a lot of time looking at the engine.

Id be inclined to fix it properly beforehand.
Unfortunately with power steering its quite strict.
A low reservoir is a minor fail, everything else including a leak is considered a major or dangerous fail

From the testers manual

2.1.5. Power steering

If power steering is not working, you may have to do a road test to check if the steering is adversely affected.

Power steering fluid level should be checked through any sight glass, the cap should not be removed.

Power steering fluid leaks should only be rejected where a component, joint or seal has failed.

Defect Category
(a) Power steering fluid leaking or system malfunctioning Major
(b) Power steering fluid:

(i) level below minimum mark
(ii) reservoir empty

Minor
Major
© Power steering:

(i) inoperative
(ii) inoperative and steering adversely affected

Major
Dangerous
(d) Power steering component:

(i) fractured or insecure
(ii) fractured or insecure and steering adversely affected

Major
Dangerous
(e) Power steering component:

(i) fouling or misaligned
(ii) fouling or misaligned and steering adversely affected

Major
Dangerous
(f) Power steering component:

(i) with an unsafe modification
(ii) modified and steering adversely affected

Major
Dangerous
(g) Power steering pipe, hose or wiring:

(i) excessively damaged or corroded
(ii) damaged or corroded and steering adve

Major
Dangerouerous fault.
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

What's in the manual & what actually happens are 2 different things in my experience.

Obviously I haven't seen this leak but if it's just a tiny leak (weep like) that is accumulating over time wipe any oil from the area before you go for the test and it won't be noticed, if it's clearly leaking and is easy to see, well that's a different story.

Ok, thanks for all your replies, I will try (this w/end) to dismantle the old P/Streeing Pump and see if I can replace it with the other 1 that just got delivered to me yesterday from ebay.
'Mean time, Any diag/how to'z will be welcome.
The van is a: 625 Lx, 1.6hdi, 2009, HT engine, it has the intercoolers pipes & a plastic cover (wire/sensors)

Note: the Power steering Pump is just under the pipes marked with an X. not sure if i can access or I will have to remove all the top parts?
Thanks.
