Thermostat failure (Leak)

Pretty sure the thermostat has gone on my 1.9D. (Takes ages to warm up, not operating at it's usual temp of just under 90).

The other day I was stuck in traffic for ages and the temperature got quite high, is this likely to be what killed the stat?

The reason for my post is mainly to ask if the thermostat is something that is easily changed, or if it is worth combining it with a cambelt change I have due soon. Might as well get them both done at once if the thermostat is a pain in the arse to do.

Changing the thermostat looks straight forward, 3 screws and your in.
Make sure when refilling with coolant you bleed the system as below.

Well, as you said it's an easy job to replace the thermostat, and solved the slow warm up etc. issues. Thanks again!

HOWEVER, the new one leaks. I can't understand how this is even possible as I changed the gasket and used a little silicone grease to hold it in place.

But the drips coming out the bottom don't lie...

Even some RTV/high temperature silicone sealant didn't stop it.

The new thermostat is branded Quinton Hazell, is anyone aware of their reputation? (Good or bad!)

Anyone else had this problem?

Hi, Check that the plastic housing hasn't got a hairline crack in it.
Did you use a new sealing ring around the thermostat?

I guess it could be that, makes as much sense as anything else. I'll have to just keep an eye on the level for now as I need it for work...

Yes the new 'stat came with a new gasket that sits on the inner 'lip' - there was no external gasket just plastic to metal 'face to face' if that makes sense which I thought was a bit unusual.
