Thanks to some bystanders it was not too bad to put the new glow plugs in on the side of the road, especially the second one (from the right) was a pain as the plastic air filter box holder was in the way and couldn't be fully removed.
What surprised me however was that the reamer I used came out very clean, barely any black stuff was sticking to the grease.
The remaining old glow plugs I'm leaving as is and will ask the mechanic on it's next check up, I'm not trusting myself anymore with these!

How did you notice that they were out while driving? Was there a sound, loss of cylinder pressure and was noticeable? I am thinking when next time I need to replace them and they snap.

Mine came out at speed :

1/ Bang !

2/ Loss of power and plenty of noise

3/ Smell of unburnt diesel

Layby, 5 mins, job done ............. Yay !!!

As Geoff said, you instantly know it when they're out. For me it was at relatively low speed (~1500 RPM) but I still could hear a "BANG" followed by a constant loud puffing noise, almost like a steam engine. To be honest it scared me enough to forget what the exact sound was as I focussed on getting to the side safely.

For what it is worth, when I had to yank the head off one of these engines,
there was the opportunity to replace the knackered glow plugs.
(i.e. snapped buggers can be easily drifted back out from under)
Only three snapped.
So unless you live North of Tromso,
I'd leave the dead ones alone.
