[Brakes] Heavy braking on rear

Hi guys I'm a newbie to this forum and was wondering if someone could give me some help. I have a 2003 berlingo 2.0 hdi and when I press the brake pedal, first of all it's spongy and second the back is braking harder than the rear. Why is this? Also I noticed today that when I took the handbrake off there was a clunk just like the rear brakes were seized on an freed off as I moved forward. Cheers guys for any advise given. Cieran

Do a fluid change, might me air in the front calipers.

Check your rear pads too

The hand break sticking is due to a build up of dust in the drums. I had this a while back with my 2007 Berlingo, in fact it got to the point that I had to rock the van back before moving forward to release the drum. I took the drums off blew out around the shoes with a compressor, gave the breaking surfaces on both the shoes and on the drum a sand with sandpaper to clean them up, put all back together and the problem was solved...

On the issue with the breaking not being balanced, I had an issue with a previous van (a Kangoo) where there is a balance valve (Technical Term) underneath the van to distribute the breaking pressure, this failed which resulted in this kind of problem...

theres a lever connected to the rear axle to increase braking to the rear when carrying a load, it may be rusted and stuck in the "loaded" position. The unit it adjusts is called the compensator. As the suspension sinks under weight the lever adds pressure to the rear brakes - this allows them to work under loaded conditions but also stop them locking up when the van is empty.
