speedo/ milomoeter erratic failure berlingo 1.6Hdi
#1
There seem to be many posts etc about this or similar problem with seemingly no definitive answer, so here is mine. 2008 Berlingo 1.6Hdi , speedometer and mileometer just stop working from time to time with no other noticeable effect, never seen to fail when engine running, always from cold start. Then some time after setting out will suddenly restore crazily seems after passing radar speed camera or some vehicles, may occur several times in a week or go for months without failure. I have examined as far as possible wiring, connectors etc, but not removing sensor unit as it is a right sod to get at placed at rear of engine very tightly fitted with adjacent parts. It is noted that in other similar cases changing the sensor unit has not solved the problem, it does seem to suggest  possibly signal degradation perhaps but how to test further?  Any ideas, please.

I've only ever seen one other post about this on this forum in the past [strangely very recently here: https://www.berlingoforum.com/thread-30118.html]

but I'll post the same answer [but slightly modified] I gave to that guy

Have you had a code reader on the vehicle to see if any historical fault messages were logged when the drop out occurred?

The only other thing I would suggest, as this has been a known 'weak spot' on a number of PSA group vehicles [still cannot get used to calling the group 'Stellantis'] of that era was the engine bay fuse/electronics box. Located adjacent to the battery on a Berlingo these can suffered from mosture/water ingress which can then cause al sorts of strange electrical problems, as it is not only a fuse box box also the electronic interface between many systems and the BSI.

Slight oxidization/corrosion on either the fuse pin blades or on the connectors in this box can cause all sorts of electrical problems.

An example being on my Berlingo Multispace, the first problem I noted was the rear wiper stopped working, then as things got worse the main wipers and headlights would randomly switch themselves on, with the car parked up and ignition off!!

So a relatively easy check and cleaning regime may cure your problems. After turning off the vehicle, open bonnet, wait the recommended time for the vehicle to go into 'sleep mode' [about 15 minutes] Disconnect the battery.

Open the engine bay fuse box and pull out each fuse in turn to check for any corrosion or oxidization on the fuse blades. Clean each one in turn with either IPA or Electrical contact cleaner and then refit. Go through all the fuses and connectors in the box.

I'm not saying it's definitely going to cure your problem but it is a cheap and easy thing to try out and at least it eliminates that as a potential problem. In my case it was corrosion but not caused by water damage to the fuses but actually a rodent had taken up residence inside the box and used it as a toilet, resulting in the electronic circuit board being toast! Luckily I replaced the whole board [a quick 15-20 minute job to replace the whole fusebox/board and no coding required] and everything was fine after that [vehicle was a 2008 1.6Hdi Berlingo Multispace]

Hi Multispacer,
Thanks very much for your suggestions, I have carried them out to find all pristine looking.
Problem occurred yesterday and this morning when nothing seemed to restore speedo and mileometer, till I had sudden inspiration from the fact that I always reverse into parking slot, I decided to test if there was reading when reversing. So driving along with no speedo I pulled up to reverse for several yards to then see speedo working, drove off forwards with speedo fine! New avenue then there is presumedly switching between forward and reverse maybe controlled from gearlever possibly, food for thought and enquiry.

Definitely an avenue to investigate. Do report back to the forum if you find anything. The other [recent] report of the same fault linked to in my earlier post also mentioned a 'click' sound so maybe a relay in the circuit somewhere sticking?
