sorry for the amount of threads just trying to get everything sorted
i want to check the gearbox oil
on most cars and vans its a grub screw half way up the gearbox you check and fill with,
was dark but all i can find is the drain plug and what seems very low a very long bolt with a 13mm head, but hole is too small to test with?
whats the proper way on these?

I changed mine yesterday. If its a be4/5 box If you remove the left hand wheel you'll see the filler plug in the end of the box (19mm) the drain is at the lowest point of the box below the diff and a 21mm plug. Takes 2 litres in a be4/5 box. I'd advise you get either a mechanics sucker / syringe and correct size hose to fit in the filler hole. I use syringes for cattle as they're high volume. Before you fill the box I suggest you warm the oil by placing in the airing cupboard or similar, makes life easier.

Handy guide that, basically what the haynes manual says. Mines a late 02 1.9 diesel with a be4/5 box same as pictured. I couldn't say whether the 8mm plug could be used for filling, don't recall seeing it. Incidentally I drained exactly 2 litres out of mine which is what the level should be. I used an 80 gear oil. I think the book says 75/80w.
