two issues, can you help?
#1
Question
issue no 1: where is the easiest place in the firewall/bulkhead to run a power lead from the battery through to connect to my amp? I tried making it go through where the bonnet catch wire goes but my power lead just gets lost in the crevice. Ive also tried popping grommets off on the battery side of the firewall and using them but same thing happens - just gets lost inside the bodywork Sad

issue no 2: Ive got oil in my water in the coolant resevoir, Ive known of water getting into the oil e.g when head gasket goes, but how and why am I getting oil in my res?

thanks Smile

Issue 2 will prob be headgasket, if water can get in oil the reverse is possible.

I agree to the headgasket, but I had this problem and asked my mechanic (Motor Guru, Ipswich. Highly recommended) who told me there is also a possibility that the oil cooler has failed. The fine ali matrix casting corrodes and gives way easily if water only coolant is used. You can disconnect it and run for a while to see if oil comes out of the inlet or exit tubes, if it does, it has. As it happened after cleaning the reservoir no more oil appeared so he has just given the headgasket a clean bill of health. Must have been residual from a previous problem before I bought it. :woop:

will mine have an oil cooler, its not a turbo diesel....
Although the guy I bought it off was a mechanic and did mention something about disconnecting an electrical connector or a pipe from the resevoir? said something about it not being needed as it wouldnt overheat due to it NOT having a turbo? I dont really remember or understand what he was saying but maybe you would know just from my sketchy ramblings?

That sounds very dodgy, any enginw can over heat.

I'd recommend getting a garage to do a sniff test on the rad to see if there are exhaust gasses present.

ok will do, cheers. At the same time, Ive been driving it for months now and its never over heated, temp gauge sits in the middle always. If it was the head gasket, wouldnt it have gone completely by now? I use the van every day for work with no probs... it doesnt use very much oil or water either :S

For Issue No 1, try either where the cabling goes through the bulkhead. Driver's side above the steering column, helps if you take off the plastic trim and wipers. Use a long thin thing, like a skewer, to help it through. Or, I am told but haven't used it myself, there is a blanking plate low down on the bulkhead on the left - in the passenger footwell area.

The oil cooler sits below the oil filter and has two coolant pipes coming out of it. You disconnect them and join them together using jubilee clips and a pieace of 15mm copper pipe, so bypassing the oil cooler. Of course I was not suggesting that the engine should be run with no cooling. I absolutely trust the mechanic's assurance that it will not damage the engine running it with the oil filter bypassed, provided it is not overexerted or run in very hot conditions. He recomended running like that for 200 miles or so or less if oil shows in the outlets. Mine is still disconnected after more than that with no overheating or problems. It runs rock solid at 80 C. It will be reconnected now that I know the cooler is good when he does the due timing belt/ waterpump change. I am just pointing out that all may not be lost if oil shows in the coolant and also that it is essential that water alone must not be used as a coolant. It can damage the aluminium components catastrophically by causing rampant corrosion.
I would add the caviat of course that if you dont know much about mechanics to take advice from someone who does and get them to do the work for you. Smile
