How do you start a thread without having to put a not solved tag on it. I've seen threads in the Mk2 section without tags on them but can't seem to find out how to do that.

I don't think you can as it is a sub-section of the Problems and Faults section and is therefore assumed to be a problem/fault that needs solving.
It's put on by the software as part of how the forum is set up.
