[Transmission] Gear Ratios

Have just change vans from a 2000 1.9D to a 2009 1.6HDi (75) Van.

I notice in my new van that to drive at 30 mph I really need to be in 4th, my last van seemed very happy to travel at 30 in 5th. As my old van did not have a rev counter I have no idea what revs I would be doing at 30 in either 4th or 5th. In my new van at 30 iam am doing about1400rpm in 4th and 1100rmp in 5th.

So presumably my newer van must have much longer legs; Any body have any data on gear ratios for the old mk1 1.9 and the newer mk2 1.6hdi vans ?

Hi NB,welcome to the forum.I made the same change & my 1.6 definately has longer legs & more economical with it.My engine does not like being under 1200 RPM but will cope at 30 in 5th only on the flattest road unloaded.

Thats wierd - my MK2 had slightly higher top gear ratio than the MK3's Ive had -or the speedo/tacho's are out slightly..
Possibly vans are lower geared than cars-this '12 plate will pull cleanly from 1000rpm in top gear,really punchy between 1300-1800 then running out of uumph at 2k.
Mapping could be a player in it all too.
