Hi and welcome to the forum.
I guess that you are looking for a Multispace rather than the van version and with your budget you will be looking at a mk 2 (2002-2008). Beyond that the choice comes down to petrol or diesel (couple of each) and trim levels (forte or desire). They aren't a huge number of options that were available, but the main ones are Modutop (roof storage), sun roof, air conditioning, and traction control.
I am sure that others will soon come along to add (and correct) my quick summary, but good luck with the search and you will find lots of advice and help on here.

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

Last year, we got hold of a 57 reg Van, 19k miles on the clock (ex Lex-hire), £4000 inc vat (from auction). But it was majorly messy inside and kinks all over, but ran fine.
Just giving an idea i guess. But like Chris said, if you are looking for a Multispace, or for a Van, it will be a later end Mk2 model. (07+)

£3-£4k will currently buy you around an 05 plate Multispace.
If you just want a basic car the 'Forte' model will provide what you're looking for and comes with either a plain roof or, much rarer, a full length retractable soft roof.
If you've got kids that have video games or portable DVD players then try for the 'Desire' which comes with the fabled 'Modutop' - a roof that includes aircraft-style storage lockers for the rear seat passengers (including a 12v power socket in each locker), rear air vents and a massive rear locker that lowers down on dampened struts and is superb for storing a portable gas ring, cups, kettle etc for those days out.
If the latter interests you, try to find one with the hard, folding parcel shelf too (rather than the soft, retractable roller-type) as then you'll have somewhere to stand the gas ring and kettle while you're brewing up
!
Welcome!

Thanks so much for all the replies! I was looking at a 1.6i Desire Petrol 05 Metallic sandstone pearl for £3995 with only 18k on the clock. This seems to me a great price. Just might get a peek at it today! However, I had thought a Diesel might be the best option but i havent a clue about Berlingos. I kind of like the idea of the folding parcel shelf too as i've been used to the Bongo and a place to have a brew sounds just the thing!
