Cam belt change - way too soon
#1
Very recently had to have a cam belt change on mine. A few months ago I noticed and unusual sound from the engine after starting from cold. I thought it sounded like a cam belt tensioner playing up. (very similar to wifes' Pug which was diagnosed as a cam belt tentioner fault so I knew the sound). However, it was only slight and has very slowly got worse and was checked on recent service.

Dealer replaced it and report said, "rust particles found at the bottom of cam belt cover,, cam belt, and ancillaries replaced under warranty."

I was unable to chat to mechanic to see what quantity of rust was found and "ever smiling desk beauty" thought I was talking Swahili when I asked was the cam belt cover sealed correctly to prevent it happening again? "er??" Garage was almost shut and no other staff apart from smiling beauties and got no answers to any questions or queries.

Less than 25k for a cam belt change is quite concerning bearing in mind most manufacturers would fight any work like this under warranty. I'm sure I've read on here about some one else having a very early cam belt change but can't find it.

Anyone else with this experience would like to hear.

Other minor anolomies which I'll report later.

I think I know that noise, if so the zsara I had and the berlngo now have had it. on the zsara it was an aux belt tensioner, on the lingo after examining the bits after the cam belt change I decided it was probably the waterpump bearing.

Same thing happened to my MK3 XTR at just under 50,000 mikes.
All replaced under warranty, the Dealer said that the Tensioner had failed!

Actually I really think that most manufacturers would carry out the repair replacing all affected parts as quickly and as quietly as they could. Why?
Well that sort of serious engine failure especially when the vehicle is under guarantee eventually gets the attention of VOSA, the motoring press and if it becomes publicly known then the sales would plummet.
No, the makers would want to sweep that under the carpet asap!

The dealership isn't the same as the manufacturer so any work done (necessary or not) can be quite lucrative for the dealer... Allegedly Undecided
