Fuel Consumption

I have just put my Berlingo on the road after rebuilding it from being smashed when i bought it. It had its first motorway run yesterday and i done 300 miles to £50 worth of deisel. I think this is quite heavy????

Its a 1.9 600 lx non turbo

Is there such a chip or something to make it better on fuel and a little quicker, It also seems very slugish ie not very quick on the uptake

Have no idea what you paid for fuel so hard to judge. How does that work out in MPG or L/100km??

Simple answer is, I am afraid, no. The 1.9D engine is bombproof and will last for years and years, but if you read the several threads here on the subject of making any substantial difference to its performance you'll learn that it's pretty much a no-no.
The cost and the work involved in transplanting other engines (and their ECUs and associated electrics) into yours would be prohibitive.

£50 (@£1.35per Litre) worth of diesel to 300 miles with a swift and probably inaccurate mental calculation is low 40s mpg (I think). All you can do is to ensure that the fuel system is clean and working correctly, a bottle of Millers diesel treatment may make a small difference but at least it'll clean out the injectors etc. It's bloody excellent on turbo diesels! IMHO

Sorry I can't be of more help. Maybe one of the others who has a 1.9D can swap notes with you so you can see what others are getting.....at least that way you'll know whether your's is performing at it's (sluggish) best.

Mine (bought 3 months ago) does 42-43mpg on average. That's a run to work with 20miles motorway and 5 miles urban driving at each end. On a long motorway run (Gloucester to Keswick) with a canoe on the roof I got 45mpg. On a non loaded motorway run not exceeding 70mph I would expect 47-48 mpg or better. Acceleration is a laugh though. I don't know why but it seems slower than my old BX. You get used to it after a while.

I just did Newcastle to Luton and back yesterday. Before going I brimmed it (the reserve light had just come on a couple of miles before doing this) Took £66 to fill it. Today the reserve light came on again and the readout was on 560 miles

Mine is a 1.6hdi

45mpg is good on a run for a 1.9.
They are slow, but bomb-proof as previously mentioned.
My 1.6HDi is only 10mpg better at 65-70mph on motorway.:thumbsup:

What bugs me is that when I owned a BX 19D it would do more to the gallon (47mpg on average) than the Berlingo 1.9D which has an ECU and all the sensors like MAF and so on. You'd think that if these sensors acutally improve emissions they'd improve mpg too.

My 1.9d managed 440 miles to a tank. This was at an average of 75 mph coming back from Exeter. I was quite impressed with this. Hope this give you some form of reference.

They're not the most economical diesels thats for sure. I would sooner have the petrol 1.4 bingo I had before than the 1.9. I'm not a very 'sedate' driver and find its performance quite undewhelming. TBH on the MWay or DC I actually think its dangerous because it is so lacklustre. Trouble is wringing the tits out of it dosen't make it go any better but makes it drink more gogo.
