My Berlingo M-S Desire 92 won't start. When I switch on all the usual lights show up on the dashboard, but when I turn the key for the engine start there is a quiet click and nothing more. Very frustrating, help please. Valerie Green

I'm a little rusty on general car mechanics Valerie due to aching joints & time etc but....
Dash-lights on & just a click on turning the key:- low battery perhaps, enough to light up dashboard but not enough to turn starter motor. Starter solenoid stuck - this could be rectified by putting car in 3rd gear & rocking back and forth to release bendix drive. May require a friend to help rocking the car -push forward & pull back as quickly as you can!
I'm sure that there are better qualified folk on this site who could offer better advice as I am a little out of touch, but that does sound like a familiar problem with any car.
Hope you get it sorted out soon.
Good luck, Adrian/Citroaddict/newtoberlingo. Wink

Put your headlights on and then try to start it. If the headlights dim you need a new battery, if not as Citroadict says try rocking it in gear.

Oh and by the way - hello, nice of you to drop in.........

As Coco says, try starting and see if headlights dim significantly etc....
Don't forget to say hello on the site here, they are a good bunch as I have learned in a short time, much help once you get used to finding it.

Unfortunately rocking in gear only works on stone age starters(inertia type).
Modern pre-engaged starters have a one way clutch which would be damaged if it was stuck in mesh & rocked.
Check engine/battery earth connections & battery condition.

Good point Ron & as I said I am a little out of touch with car mechanics. I read the post as being a '92 vehicle so would stone age starter principles apply?
Thanks, I have learned something new tonight. Confusedalut:

Thank you everyone, I will check the 'headlight dimming' first and take it from there. Grateful for the kindly words and prompt attention. Valerie

Hi CitroAddict...In this case 92 refers to 92bhp which probably means that the car is a 1.6TDi.
