Ok.... a 2005 1.9D engine......
Blanking off the EGR ... worthwhile or not ? I've had a look around but haven't really seen a reply that covers this for the 1.9D
Looking forward to hearing about this.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't the 1.9D a non turbo and if so I think they only use EGR valves on turbo engines?

I don't recall an EGR on my 2000 1.9D - may be I never noticed or they were fitted to later models.
Having very little understanding in how the EGR works - would it be possible to blank it off at the exhaust side, and reconnect the pipe to the air filter, thus allowing it still to suck clean air when required and therefore not annoy the sensors that would set off your engine management light?

Don't know whether they are on the 1.9 or not.
They work by relying on a signal sent from the ECU to open and then the exhaust gas, being forced out of the cylinder, forcing/being drawn into the inlet tract. As this is past the MAF sensor, it then sees a drop in airflow and reports that it is working correctly. To fool the MAF sensor you would need another source of pressurised air to show the drop in airflow. Or some clever box of electronics to replicate the signal.

When the egr on my '03 1.9d started failing at an inconvenient time and place Green Flag didn't know how safe it was to continue my long journey - so they transported me. Sporadic power loss combined with clouds of smoke from the exhaust shook my confidence somewhat. The mileage was about 100k or so.
Interesting thread.

Hi Mike, Noel, Coco, they do indeed have an EGR. If you look at the rear of the engine on the top of the exhaust you can see a metal pipe leading to the air intake piping at the front of the engine where the exhaust gases re enter the engine.
Captain Kirk, sorry about the big yellow taxi ride, hopefully this will be an even more interesting and informative thread.
Geoff.

Yes the egr valve can be blanked on 1.9d's.
Blanking plates are available on ebay and fit at the rear of the engine, between where the egr pipe bolts onto the front exhaust system.
The bolts that hold the egr pipe on are a nightmare to remove though as they are an allen bolt and are likely to be rusty as a rusty thing.
To fit my blanking plate I filed down the bolts to create two flat edges so a spanner could be used and soaked the bolts in oil first..
Good luck if you want to try!

Nice one adam3rdanvey, I'll definitely give it a go. I'll report back when I get it done, may be a couple of weeks with work and holidays coming up though. I like to be in advance of things.

Coco,I blanked off the vacuum pipe to the switch on my old C15 & it worked a treat.

I've tried every permutation of everything....and I still get the MIL.
