Soundproofing

Hi guys,

Recently started working as a tour manager and use the berlingo for a huge amount of motorway miles currently - however the general road noise from wind etc is doing my head in (no faults - it's always been this way, but before this job I rarely drove for longer than 3 hours at a time and I'd be blasting the radio). Just wondering if anyone had done it before and what area's they'd say to focus on and what sort of sound proofing they'd used?

I tend to drive with the window open all the time and as soon as I got my van the wind noise drove me mad so ive fitted a set of tinted wind deflectors and its made a big difference. Made my Heko and cost about 30 quid I think. My van came panelled out which made it a bit better but ive filled the gap between with insulation to cut noise further and got a carpet on the floor and the arches. It certainly quitened the van down just need to line the roof to finish it off.

I use big flat wads of loft fibrelass put into bin liners.
These are duct taped into the voids where the windows would have been then the ply lining over the top.
Also insulates the panels, heatwise.
A solid bulkhead is the most effective noise reduction.
When its time for tyre replacement go for a tread pattern that has the grooves going predominantly around the tyre rather than across it.

thanks guys, as mine's the multispace wont be able to fit a bulkhead! However have gone for the wind deflectors so hope they help

I got a set for mine -they won't help actual road noise much but they do help if you like to have the windows slightly open.
They also act as sun visors and from a tarty point of view, look really nice.

okay - well thought i'd update you all! Bought a 40 pack of silent coat sheets from fleabay (£80 ish, free postage thank god as it weighs a ton!

then set about taking off interior cards to stick on the 'proofing - here's what it looks like!

boot - still can hear a light rattle and squeek - much improved so am going to give it another layer today!

as for speaker sound quality, it is marginally better - however im just glad it wont squeek and rattle and pop for hours on end with every drive!

The above makes a big difference, I did this with my C15's over the years.
Making sure there are no missing panel grommets to doors and the engine bay is important as even a small hole lets in a surprisingly large amount of noise.
Extra roof insulation also helps particularly when it is raining ! A bit harder to do in a car than a van though.

thanks geoff! will bear in mind for the few sheets I have left. Was thinking of doing the floor under the plastic sheet as that's a easy thing to remove!

I ply lined all the rear and also boxed in my wheel arches and filled the voids with insulation including the wheel arches and the van is night and day compared to when I first brought it home without panelling.I just sit around 50/55mph and you can hardly hear a sound from the rear :-D
