Mk1 1.9D or Mk2 1.6 16v petrol??

Hi there,
Been a huge Citroen Fan for many years and looking to buy a Berlingo.
I'm struggling to chose between a 1.6 16v Petrol or a 1.9D.

Have seen both which I'm interested in, both have modutops, a 2002 Mk1 1.9 with 75,000 for £2650 and a Mk2 1.6 16v with 75,000 (and aircon) on Ebay starting at 2000!!!

Doe's not seem much difference with MPG but better performance with 1.6. Will the 1.9D last longer?? who knows!!

Any advice please as I just can't decide.

Have you driven both? If so, what did you think? My personal preference was to go for the petrol. The loss in mpg is more than made up for a nicer drive (in my opinion) and I reckon that service and maintenance are cheaper and more straight forward on a petrol (especially as most of my use is short/stop start driving). Interesting also to see that most of the "help" type posts on here for engine issues are from diesels. I shall now stand well back as the diesel owners jump in!!

Have not driven either yet although I test drived a new 1.9D back in 2003 although I can't remember much about that!
Owned a new ZX 1.9D back in the day and remember that was slow to pull away although fine out and about. Like yourself I do alot of local driving but do long distance too.

In my experience, the mpg figures work out to be around 28mpg around town or if in a hurry. On a longer run I the average is probably something close to 40. For me, I just prefer the way that a petrol drives but they are generally a bit cheaper to buy and usually can be found with lower mileages. On another note, air-con is a big plus.
