Replacement engine 1.9D 1997 model
#1
Hi, I have a 1997 diesel Berlingo Combi, according to vehicle papers the engine is D-D9B. Unfortunately due to running out of refrigeration liquid abruptly it has blown the head gasket. A mechanic has suggested replacing the current engine with a reconditioned one, or maybe from a breaker's.
I would be interested to know what choice of engines there is, maybe from Xantia or Peugeot Partner, if anyone has experience with this problem.

why not just replace the gasket, much cheaper!or are you wanting more power?

Truth is, the estimates I've been shown for the repair job all go very close to the €1000 mark, and this is an engine which has run over 230 thousand kilometres, 45 thousand of which on the current cam belt; as well as this there is no knowing what further damage may have been caused by the sudden loss of refrigeration fluid, if surfaces would need machining, prior to the installation of a new seal. A replacement engine from a breaker's may cost around €300, + another €300 labour.
The mechanic tells me that it must be exactly that engine.
Thanks for replying

Hi, This happened on my old Mk1. replacing the head wouldn't of helped as it was the the engine block between two of the cylinders that had gone. I ended up replacing it with a Peugeot car engine of the same type. XUD9 (D9B).
Have a look at this link it may give you an idea. Confusedalut:

I decided to take up this thread once again to update on how the project has gone.
Several engines were found, namely XUD9 from Berlingo, Xantia and ZX. The one from a Xantia was not used due to coupling issues (gearbox position etc). The motor from a Berlingo was not taken either, too many kilometres on the clock and distinct signs of oil leakage. The successful candidate Smile was the engine from a ZX, on the basis that it was newer, and had done much less hard labour. It should be pointed out that this engine comes with a Bosch injector rather than the shoddy one my van originally had, and thus makes for a vast improvement in fuel consumption and performance at low revs. The clutch from the ZX was also installed as there was a difference in plate size assembly.
All in all, very pleased with the result, now I've got the van back on the road running beautifully.
