radio looses volume

hi,

when driving the volume on my radio drops off to mute and every time i try and turn up up either manually or my the steering controls it goes straight back to mute...any ideas ?

maybe a problem with steering controls, the contacts inside maybe causing problems is there a way steering controls could be disconnected to give it a try
