2.0HDi Fuel Filter Housing Draining & Cleaning
#1
I'm about to do my own service on the Berlingo for the first time. I've been reading the Haynes joke book but, as usual, it's pretty useless.

Can anyone tell me how to drain the fuel filter? Also, what do you use to clean out the fuel filter housing prior to fitting a new fuel filter?

There is a drain tap at the bottom with a length of clear hose attached.

I just use clean lint free rag to wipe out. It shouldn't need cleaning really. The securing ring on top can be tight, either use a special tool, Andy Womble posted a link to one that he bought from Ebay, or I use a piece of wood to gently tap it round. Take your time and it will come free just don't be tempted to give it a whack !

The new filter should come with bungs to fit all the fuel pipes whilst you have them off.

Good luck

I did mine by hand, It wouldnt move in the engine bay using a strap wrench (Haynes quote "these are tight and we have not removed one without damage occuring") so I removed the filter housing and lightly gripped it in my vice, not tight and ensured that the mounting lugs were diagonaly braced against the jaws wrapped a rag round it and it unscrewed by hand!. I wonder if a strap wrench or similar in situ distorts the top ring causing breakage? anyway I now have a spare filter housing as I went to the scrappy beforehand just in case>
