A worrying development.

Many may well think that this will not affect them. However the words:-

"The Commission proposes to introduce a definition for a roadworthiness test that components of the vehicle must comply with characteristics at the time of first registration. This may prevent most modifications to vehicles without further approval of the vehicle. (this will apply to many components and to all types of vehicle)"

and

"“(7) ‘vehicle of historic interest’ means any vehicle which fulfils all the following conditions :
It was manufactured at least 30 years ago,
It is maintained by use of replacement parts which reproduce the historic components of the vehicle;
It has not sustained any change in the technical characteristics of its main components such as engine, brakes, steering or suspension and
It has not been changed in its appearance;"

Seem to imply that any change will be illegal. So, if PSA specify Michelin tyres as OE that's what we will all have to buy in the future.

Makes interesting reading once you get through the 'Euro babble'.
Basically speaking (if this becomes Law) any modified vehicle (except Historic and usual exempt vehicles) will fail an MOT in the future. Every vehicle on the road must be 'factory' standard. Or else....

The only thing that such swingeing Euro legislation will achieve is more average
motorists ignoring the official system. Some young guys already realise that driving with no
insurance and being caught, fined and punished is less expensive than paying the insurance
premiums. Brussels are already making significant moves against motor-cyclists which may
turn around and bite them on the arse!
