[Transmission] Reverse gear difficult to get
#1
Hello,

I have a '99 Berlingo Multispace (1.4 petrol) which is becoming difficult to get into reverse gear. I had noticed over the past couple of months, that when putting the car into reverse, it did not always engage first time, but now this is becoming more common than not.

This only happens in reverse gear; all the other gears are fine.

Anyone experienced a similar thing, or has an idea about what is causing this?

Thanks in advance,

Willi

Hi Willi,
Reverse gear does not have a syncromesh gear unlike fwd gears, therefore, if the clutch is not fully disengaging it grates going in. You need to check why the clutch is not working properly (Carpet stopping pedal fully depressing etc)
A quick fix can be to select 1st gear then reverse as this will stop the gears spinning and make selecting reverse easier.
I'm sure someone with more mechanical knowledge will be along soon
Regards,
Griff
