Salting the M5 !!!!!!
#1
We travelled down the M4 from junction 18 and onto the M5 down into Somerset, this afternoon, warm, sunny, 22.5c and they were salting the motorway, looked like a fog in the distance, everybody was trying to get out of the way of it and got plastered in salt, have they gone mad or what!!!!!!

Hope it was to disperse spillage, or they're using a different calendar and / or thermometer from the rest of us !!! .

It was on the flashing info boards on M4, and they'd salted nearly 20 miles by the time we'd got off, it was a right mess, you could see it coming up off the tyres from traffic in front for miles, we were sprayed with it, looks like Christmas decoration

Found this after doing a google,

Found out what it was, the heat starts to melt the Tarmac so gritters are sent out to spread crushed rock, apparently it's better than the risk of chunks of Tarmac being ripped up by vehicles!! So there we go, gritters in summer.

Cant really see it but might be true, might not.

That would be believable only if it were really hot. Today wasn't really hot and I've not heard of them doing that before when we have had really hot summers.

certainly does get done Crinkly. We spread sand or quarry dust on some roads if the tar becomes soft. Also use the sand/dust to dry up oil/fuel or other spillages.( and I am in Scotland, so not many blistering hot summers up here). We are gearing up for winter maintenance at the moment, gritters will be out from around the end of October.

Well, tanto I get the feeling that you may be busy again this winter, according to forecasts.
