Brake drum screws
#1
Hello all,

I have a 2005 1.6HDI. The small screws holding the rear brake drums on are corroded and won't turn with a screwdriver. I'm sure I'll be able to get them out in some other way but before I do so I'd like to source replacements. Anyone know of a source for these, please, or is it via a dealer? Could I use a suitable sized countersunk machine screw and just cut to length?

Thanks for your help.

Use an impact driver or your screwdriver with a mallet ( turning pressure applied as you strike ).
Failing that you'll have to drill the screw head off.
Any replacement screw cut down to size will be fine as long as it has the same head type.
If you really do fail then don't worry about the screw as it is just a temporary securement untill the road wheels go back on, the wheel nuts / bolts hold the drum down tight and the drum is centred by the hub centre.
Geoff.

Hi David,Try beating the drum & hub face with a copper hammer,Use an appropriate round punch tap firmly the heads of the screws. If you know someone with an impact driver, try that.Apply WD40 around the drum/hub joint SPARINGLY first.Be patient they should come off. Before refitting, clean rust from all mating surfaces & apply copper grease again sparingly. We wouldn't want our brakes soaked in WD40 or copper grease, would we? Good luck, let us know how you fare.

Seem to recall that there are two holes, diametrically opposite so in the event that one gets knackered through seized pin etc you can always use the other when re-assembling....

BTW, the ones fitted as standard have a Torx type head not slotted or hex...

Hello again all,
Thanks for the advice and apologies for not responding sooner - I've just got round to the job today.
I managed to get some new screws. I got the part number from the Citroen technical documentation referenced elsewhere on the forum and a quick ebay search revealed a supplier.
Was fortunate on one side as the screw head still had a little bit of grip and I managed to get it turned with a torx bit. Drum was a bit obstinate but eventually got it off. Pads fine so a quick clean up etc and that side was done. The new screws are stainless steel and I've covered the head in a smear of grease so hopefully no more corrosion problems. There were two holes in the drum but only one had a screw in. When I tried a new screw in the other hole it wouldn't fit. Don't know what's going on there! Also, the Citroen documentation suggests only one screw is used.
Not so fortunate on the other side and I ended up drilling the head off. Again a bit of a struggle with the drum but not too bad. The remains of the screw are in place. It projects a little way through the axle end (not sure of the correct name for it) but I couldn't get a good enough grip to turn it. May have helped to remove the shoes but, as Geoff pointed out, the wheel bolts hold the drum in place so I didn't bother. I may invest in a screw/stud remover to tidy things up Alternatively I read somewhere about left handed drill bits that can bite into a screw and remove it. Should work in this low torque situation ??
Thanks again.

David
