Looking for Multispace- Mk2 or Mk3 - Pet or Diesel Mk2 or Mk3.
#1
Hi,

Looking to buy a Berlingo, but not yet sure if petrol or diesel.

I will do about 7k miles a year, so fuel/tax will be about 600 per year more, but a little worried about FAP issues (the citroen system seems to use an additive is this better / worse that the no additive systems?).

Does the fuel saving over 3-4 years outweight increased repair costs?

Travelling is usually a minimum of 20mins on local roads and dual carriageway (up to 40-50mph), so hopefully the engine should get to temperature.

Not sure if to go for a low mileage Mk2 Multispace (say 06 - 20k miles), or a newer Mk3 with 50-60k miles).

Is there an advantage/disadvantage of the newer 1.6HDi over the older 1.9?

Repair costs are always an unknown, as is reliability. At 7000 miles a year, there will probably not be much difference in cost between petrol and diesel vehicles. However, any particular vehicle, petrol or diesel, could turn out to be particularly expensive.

I have driven both the Mk2 & Mk3, and prefer the Mk2, but that's a matter of personal preference. If your main concern is reliability, newer is usually better.

1.6 HDi is much quicker and much more economical than the old 1.9. To be honest, the old 1.9 is not much more economical than the petrol engines.

If you are only doing 7k miles pa & want a mk2 you may be better getting a petrol. As pointed out, old technology 1.9 diesel is little more economical than petrol & is very slow. 1.6hdi has best performance & most economical but ensure full service history with oil changes on time. You may struggle to find a petrol mk3 as most are diesel.

Mk2 2.0HDi is the best of the bunch - but then some might say I'm biased

I much prefer my 2.0Hdi mk1 over the 1.9 mk1 I had before fuel economy is better to!
