[Engine] EGR problem?
#1
Hi all im new so be nice please.

Just got myself a old Y reg 2001 i think 1.9d. i love it! But...

It starts and drives fine but has an intermittent idle problem, from hot or cold. The revs drop and it begins to choke up with white'ish smoke out the back. rev'ing the engine clears the smoke and it sounds good but releasing the accelerator and it starts all over again.

i have unplugged the egr valve and it seemed to run well (apart from the engine management dash light came on), but like i said its an intermittent fault so cant be sure its the egr.

The only other thing that is wrong is the rev counter doesn't work properly. sometimes it will flick about giving reading of 1k or more but most of the time it is on 0. could this be related to the idle problem or is it a separate issue? and how to fix?

Thanks
Ricky

Hi & Welcome,
Are you loosing coolant? Just thinking that it may be water vapour coming out of the exhaust that clears when reved. I'm sure someone will be along with other suggestions soon.

HI dont think im loosing coolant, also had the egr unplugged for a long drive 40mil today and the rough idle is still there so maybe its not the egr valve?? possibly the injectors or a sensor somewhere?

Mine runs 'rough' from cold.
After couple of mins or a mile or so, it is perfect.
I was thinking sensor? Somewhere? Confusedcratch:

Here you are.

1260 is your injector lift sensor, 1620 is the vehicle speed sensor, 1220 is the coolant temp sensor, 1345 is the oxygen sensor heater relay, 1310 is the air flow meter,1253 is the EGR valve and 1313 is the engine speed sensor which could be all your problems. Confusedalut:

Thanks for that Rustscrat and for your email.

now i guess i need to locate them sensors and check them out. how do i test if the sensor is working? can this be done with a multimeter, and what should i be looking for? almost considering getting a lexia 3 scanner off ebay, not cheap tho, anybody had any experience with one, maybe on this year berlingo?

Thanks

Mine has been worth it's money.
If you are going to get one from ebay, have a look at this seller, I would highly recommend him. Helped me out no end when I was having trouble with mine.
