Drive shaft removal

Hi Folks,
Having fought my way past the mot it soon became obvious that that clutch was on the way. i watched a couple of youtube guides to clutch replacement, easy! but no idea of best way to remove drive shafts and in what order to remove suspension etc, think i need a ball joint removal tool only about £20 any advice about pitfalls greatly received.

The drive shaft nut is 32mm or 36mm i am not sure which, but you will need either an air/electric impact gun or a 3' to 4' breaker bar and someone sitting in the car with the brakes on (M49 models with steel wheels it is possible to slacken the nut with the car on its wheels which makes things easier) also I have found when doing wheel bearings it is possible to remove the hub unit from the front suspension strut instead of removing the whole unit (pinch bolt at top of hub unit, use a steel wedge to spread it a gnat's and plenty of penetrant ) if you do not drain the gearbox oil first it dont half make a mess of the drive/garage floor Confusedillyme::whistle:

for the tips about removing the hubs, unfortunately i already found out about gearbox oil when i replaced rubber bush on suspension arm and removed calipers for new brake discs, pulled out driveshaft without realising and then went for bacon sarni break,
Easy to refill through the top breather under battery tray till it runs out of 22mm drain plug under n/s wheel arch, behind plastic arch liner.
Getting quite familiar with suspension now, changed o/s front wheel bearing recently. relatively simply apart from fitting actual bearing into hub, was told after much struggle that garages use a 20 tonne press to push bearing in to hub.so best left to people with right tools.
I hope this info helps someone else. but personally i always like to learn the hardest way, it's character building!!!!!!

Thanks for most excellent information. i will get a ball joint tool and then i think i can tackle the rest to remove driveshafts and replace the clutch,
Lets hope so anyway, cant afford to pay local trusted garage £490 and tried Mr Clutch, they quoted £269.99 seems too cheap when 2 sources said about 6 hours labour. What do you think? thanks again. Terry
