Chap turned up this morning ,plugged a laptop into the diagnostic port and popped off a few panels.
Changed the main bearings,gave an advisory about corrosion around the front door panel (will eventually stop the seal from sealing).
He had some parts from a previous customers' cancelled job so he put in some new filters,hoses and motor brushes,and a heater element.
All covered by an aftermarket warranty.
Runs smooth and quiet now.
Already you've guessed its the Hotpoint I'm on about, but so many parallels are there should we be regarding our blingos as cars anymore!

Ahhh Hotpoint, a great British name to conjour with along with Creda and others that were made in the UK or more specifically in here Stoke on Trent....

Now alas, made in Poland....

They were made in Merthyr Tydfil some years ago alongside the Candy badged machines-same layout as the Polish factory only more foreigners.

Yes, appears so and allegedly, so do Berlingos BUT trying to get an instrument to communicate with them is the dodgy bit....

There were various factories up and down the country including Llandudno and Chester but over the years they have been whittled down as each succesive takeover bid stripped the assets and shut them down.

I had a Creda with a maintenance thing and when they decided they could no longer repair it, they gave me a new washing machine. Now, wouldn't it be nice if they did that with Berlingoes?

Chapter and verse on British domestic appliances.
I worked for Hotpoint as a senior engineer for 14 years and left in 1994.
Hotpoint and Creda became allied in around '91. Suddenly all Hotpoint engineers became Creda experts
after 1 days training!
Creda made in Stoke-on-Trent and Hotpoint made in Llandudno.
Hoover were made in Merthyr and were bought by Candy early '90s.
Servis were bought by Merloni around '82.
Bendix (the first front loading automatic in the UK) sort of fizzled out
in the early nineties as Tricity Bendix and were latterly made by Zanussi.
In the 90's Zanussi (Italian) were in very deep errm...trouble and were basically bought
by Electrolux (a Swedish company).
Electrolux had built AEG's cheaper machines for a while so cheap AEGs would have Zanussi parts and electrics.
I believe that the only British company still making Major appliances is White Knight whose tumble driers are good
and who also made tumble driers for Bosch.
There are NO British designed and made washing machines now...a couple are however assembled here.
This year Whirlpool (Philips...Dutch) have announced that they will no longer be a presence in the UK.
So what to buy?
I will never recommend anything built in Italy. Indesit machines are actually designed to last a
couple of years and if they fail are prohibitively expensive to repair. (A few years back one of the popular front-loader
motors was 75% of the cost of a new machine!) Indesit, Ariston, Servis, Hotpoint, Creda are owned by Merloni.
I rate Bosch and Siemens machines (same company), despite the cheaper Bosch models being built in Spain.
At the moment I have an LG which has been 100% reliable for ten years. My next machine will be a Miele.
They're the only European company who don't make machines for other companies and use no Italian parts, only German.
They design their machines to last 20 years. They guarantee the more expensive machines parts for ten years.

I worked for a short while on the assembly lines at Creda in Stoke on Trent, very much a hire-and-fire employer with a core of permanent workers and loads of temps as and when required. Never ceased to amaze me who built what for whom, badge engineering doesn't even come into it. We built cookers by Creda, GEC, Canon and others I can't remember, when the lines were in full production it would make you dizzy and the way things were literally thrown together made me wonder how long they were going to last for......
