EGR VALVES THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY

Having just spent four hours cleaning out my manifold and EGR valves. Wondered what other people thought of these strange devices that intentionally seem designed to contaminate your engine and exhaust system. Has anyone got any diagrams also for EGR operation/solenoids etc.........

How did you clean manifold and EGR valve?

Was this by removal and scrape/wash out or did you use one of the aerosol sprays that are available.

You are lucky if you can access easy as on the 2.0HDI it is a sod to get at!!!

Yes we have had to blank ours due to the high cost of replacement because of the massive mileage its done (1.6 HDI 266000 miles) the plastic cover on top of the rocker had been loose for a long time and had worn a hole in the EGR valve as you can imagine with such a worn engine its not as crisp as it should be but pulls very well

There are several spray type treatments on the market such as this one from e-bay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...K:MEWAX:IT

To use this you would need to gain access to the air ducting downstream from the mass air-flow sensor and to spray into the inlet manifold trunking while the engine is running. How succesful it is, I don't know, all I know is that it is supposed to loosen accumulated carbon and other muck from the induction and around the EGR valve and to blow it out the exhaust in a cloud of unpleasant smoke and shite !!!! (Usual caveat about using such chemicals). I don't know if this has a lasting effect or can damage components such as the turbo so again I cannot comment.

In my years of working on diesel engines of all types and rating, I have yet to see a better method than removal of components and cleaning by hand using screwdrivers, wire brushes etc and to visually inspect inside for cleanliness however access to the inlet manifold on some of the Berlingos is restricted and I have heard of extreme cases of engine removal to gain access to components.

You pays your money, you takes your choice on this one....

I did not use anything other than a washing up brush and some muc-off bike degreaser, available widely.

I wouldn't use the spray cleaner as to be any good it has to be quite corrosive and that would not be great for surfaces of turbo? Can't see it dissolving the gunk though.

Is a nasty job on the HDI models as bolts not easily accessible, and haynes manual not very clear,this could be a case of "if it aint broke don't fix it"!

how did ye blank it? any error messages limp modes?


personally id never use sprays to clean a inlet. does it then coat the turbo vanes, cylinder, exhaust and particle filter with gunk.

take it off. shortcuts dont help in the long run

I've seen egr's blanked off by constructing a gasket from a flat piece of aluminium drinks can. This is cut to the size of the base of the egr and is fitted inbetween egr and exhaust manifold/elbow.

Don't think you would get any error codes as long as the electrical connector is intact,as this method does not interfere with the operation of the egr, from the BSI's point of view anyway!!
