Left hand (nearside) engine mount
#1
I have a 2005 Multispace Desire with M59 2.0 HDi and have a vibration at exactly 1250 rpm in each gear when under load. It is not a problem when under way as rpm is usually more than 1250 but 30mph in 4th equates to 1250 when in town and it drives me nuts (no pun intended). It sounds a bit like some engine part vibrating against a heat shroud (of which there are a few) but I have checked them all when on a ramp and found nothing. Another thing I have noticed is that the engine has a slight wobble under strong acceleration, esp in 2nd gear and 3rd gear. You can feel it in the gearstick. And, there's more, it gives a little knock on starting. All this points to an engine mount. I have checked the one in front of the driver and the one underneath which has a driveshaft through it. Both look fine. But I can't see how to get the the nearside (left) one. The Haynes says remove the ECU but this is mounted atop the McPherson strut mount and doesn't seem to be in the way. I would guess the mounting is under the battery but don't fancy removing the battery, and the tray, if it's not. Can anyone help? Has anyone had this noise/vibration? All suggestions welcome.

Thanks Ron. I just wish I could see how to check it out. As you say, hopefully someone will know the answer. I have not been disappointed yet!!

Hi, if it's the gear box mounting, remove the battery and then the battery tray. All will become clear. Don't throw away the inner sleeve as this is separate and doesn't come with the new one. (No.16)
Gear box mount pt. No. 1844 68

Today I have removed the battery (easy) and the tray (difficult because of all the cables attached to it) and the mounting was easily accessible. (Thanks Rustcrat - you're such a fount of knowledge!) It looked fine from the top but I removed it anyway, after supporting the engine on a jack. I was glad I did as the underside was coated in black goo and the rubber soft. AND, (not only but also) the hole was elliptical. New one ordered today. Will post result when fitted.

New mounting arrived today from Neat Car Parts (London). Only ordered it yesterday. Very fast. It is obviously in better condition than the one already fitted but the bad news is the hole on the underside is elliptical, so that's how it's meant to be. I assumed my engine wobble was due to it not being round. Anyway, I have yet to fit it (tomorrow) so will advise the outcome when fitted.

New mounting fitted today without any problems. I am pleased to report that the engine no longer wobbles under heavy acceleration, nor did it give a little knock on starting, so the new mounting has obviously stiffened things up a bit. But the funny noise is still there, exactly as before. So the tinny noise at 1250 rpm is unlikely to be related to a soft engine mount. I am beginning to think I might have to let a Citroen dealer have a listen. Yesterday I sent off for a set of those cables to connect to the OBDll socket. I will see if the diagnostics reports anything before I see the dealer. In the meantime I am marking this as solved. Thanks for the suggestions.

Sorry to revive an old thread but like the idea of containing relevant information...

I replaced my gearbox engine mount last week as the engine knocks and startup/turning off and also knocks/rattles when going over bumps. Sounded like it was coming from the gearbox side but since replacing I'm still getting the knocking. Is part 16 on the image above meant to be coated in rubber as mine looked like it may have had rubber on it at some point?

The engine support mount underneath (27) *looks* OK but might be worth replacing as it's cheap. I'm certain the noise is not coming from the O/S. If it's not a mount, what else should I be looking at? Will the suspension struts knock?

Because it's listed separate to the rubber mount I would say this is a steel sleeve that is inserted to the rubber. Confusedalut:
