mk3 cutting out.???
#1
Hi Guys I am sure I have read somewhere about mk3`s cutting out???, Reason being tonight after 1 1/2 drive I got to country narrow lane, and car just cut out. Lights, wipers, radio all still on but no power. So stopped, turned engine off, and restarted , and drove 1/2 hour back home. Thankfully no one behind, doing about 20mph down single narrow lane. Any thoughts????

I would have thought if it was dirty fuel it would have coughed and spluttered a bit before stopping. But I have had odd symptoms with a dirty filter so anything's possible. Change the fuel filter, they only cost a few quid.

I've had this once with my 2008 Mk3. Turning a corner I lost all electrical power and coasted to a halt with very heavy steering. Thinking about the sequence of events I concluded that I must have caught the ignition key with my right knee. This was a couple of month ago and there's been no repetition.

I doubt it was the Asda fuel as said before first try another fuel filter.

thanks Phil, Colin, I know I have read on here it happening to someone else , so thats at least 3 of us, very concerning, if on motorway at night or dual carriageway it would have been hell.....Modern cars with all the electronics can have their moments.

I had exactly the same thing but I thought it was too silly to mention it...
The fold up keyfob design flops downwards under the weight of my other keys and acts as a perfect lever for my knee to switch off the engine.
Great for the turbos' oil feed too:eek:
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

I had a similar fault with my Mk 3. I also lost power steering which was the worst problem. I remembered a conversation with a mechanic about CANbus sytems which prompted me to disconect the battery a few seconds then reconnected. Everything worked and have had no similar problems since. I had been driving on a lot of flooded roads a couple of days before which may have caused the problem.
