Im for this idea but I think some of our roads do need to get upgraded first.

Old news though, I wonder who 'recycled' the story at the BBC?

These bright ideas rarely work and not just because a big chunk of our road system literally dates back to medieval times.
The companies transport planners and sales depts will need to be on the ball 24/7 to ensure the vehicle is at full capacity every mile it travels otherwise it simply will not pay off its investment cost.
Tesco invested in double deck artic trailers which proved to be a waste of time and I once drove for an outfit who couldnt see that taking one pallet of goods from hereford to wakefield (on a 6 axle rig with no backload) wasnt a good long term business model. They folded.
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

No there would be less trucks on the road.

Thats the point I failed to make -there would be the 25m truck loaded 3/4 full followed half a day later with a regular size artic 1/3 full.
Even if the logistics people did their utmost best the company would have to pander to the whim of the customer
It is on my to do list.

Have you ever seen these negotiate a turn? Ok for motorway hauls but anything twisty and the second trailer will become unmanageable. Good idea but we don't have the roads for it.
